Do you know the difference between Active vs Passive Marketing?
Did you know that many marketers think that some of the passive marketing they do is active… but don’t know better.
As the co-host for the 29 Minute Hangout, I am getting the opportunity to interview internet industry and network marketing leaders.
Over the last four weeks, a consistent message has emerged. Active vs Passive Marketing.
Now if you have never heard of this before, you are not alone. I had never heard it referenced like this before until a year ago.
And I promise you, if you don’t know the difference, it could be hurting your business.
So let’s break it down and get our hands dirty. It’s time to break down active vs passive marketing.
Passive Marketing
What defines passive marketing? Sharing this from http://smallbusiness.chron.com/
Passive marketing reaches the customer through customer service and smart positioning. For example, a customer uses a search engine to locate the business or a phone book to find the phone number. The marketing was done before the need arose, and no special event was required to bring the customer into the business. Passive marketing is thoughtful and anticipatory. It takes work and planning, but practical means and methods — such as having good, informative articles on a website, and being listed in industry directories — do get results.
As a network marketer some other forms of passive marketing are:
- Writing a blog post
- Creating a video
- Posting on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, or any social media platform
- Sending an Email
- Placing an Ad on Facebook
Each of these are passive forms of marketing. Great for long term results but are not thought of as short term result getters.
With passive marketing you are building longevity and branding. This shows you are in for the long haul.
Active Marketing
What defines Active Marketing? Sharing from http://smallbusiness.chron.com/
Active marketing requires action on the part of the small business. Active marketing may mean networking with other businesses or working on building your referral pool. It also includes selectively advertising to drive in new business. This type of marketing is deliberate and purposeful. It takes effort. Active marketing often includes meeting vendors and customers face to face, holding sales appointments, and making cold calls. This kind of marketing requires skill and persistence.
As a network marketer some forms of active marketing are:
- Attending Live Events in Your Area
- Face to Face networking
- Picking Up The Phone and Calling People
- Actively Engaging In Conversation on Social Media
- Seeking Out New Contacts Beyond Your Circle
- Meetup.com – Find clubs and groups with similar interests.
- Doing a Presentation
I will tell you right now active marketing is how the money is made. It’s not in the passive marketing… but passive is still needed to build your brand, get found online, and so much more.
If you are in the business of network marketing, then you need to be doing a blend of both. Passively building your brand online and actively building your business.
I personally spent too much time on passive marketing because I thought by doing these activities… I was actively marketing? Boy was I in for a rude awakening when I heard this.
Active vs Passive Marketing
Is one preferred over the other?
Active vs Passive marketing isn’t an either or. With the ability to carry the internet with you wherever you go, it is in your best interest to have a presence online. So having a blog or doing video, while considered passive can have a huge effect on your active marketing.
If you tell people you are with your MLM, there is a really good chance they are going to go online and do research… will they find you?
So make sure you invest the time to learn attraction marketing, a required training if you are want the best in MLM online training.
Don’t short change your MLM biz by not having a presence online, in the long run it will help you grow your business even faster.

[…] it’s important to do both passive and active marketing. Instead of me rambling on, check out this post and this video on passive and active marketing. These do a really good job explaining the whole […]
Such a powerful question and such a BIG difference between the two. Both serve a purpose and both are important.
It’s tempting to want to hide behind the computer and “think” we are working our business when in reality, that’s a very slow way to go!
I’m currently in a 90 day team building blitz and am actively engaged in LOTS of offline meetups and networking while I also do my passive marketing, in small pockets of time when I am not out and about!
Thanks for posing the question and sharing the realities!

Hi Jackie! When this question came up in my mastermind, most people were shocked to find that posting on fb was not active marketing. 🙂
There is a huge difference and I am excited that you are doing a 90 day blitz and attending network marketing events. That is key to any success both on and offline. Thank you for your insightful comment and look forward to having you back here again.
I want to learn how to grow my business to
the max.
Hi Tracy… I see you are with an awesome MLM company. Are they teaching you the attraction marketing formula? I have found this to be required training for all those in the MLM industry.
So what does grow your business to the max look like for you? What kind of lifestyle are you looking for? What is one thing that you want to accomplish with your business?
